Parents who spank their children tend to see it as an important, effective, and useful tool in teaching kids how to behave. While child health and development experts point to research that indicates that physical punishment is not effective and puts kids at risk for a number of negative outcomes, research shows that spanking is practiced in many homes.

The findings, recently presented at the annual conference of the Society for Social Work and Research in San Francisco, suggest that moms and dads who perceive their standing in society to be lower are more likely to engage in authoritarian parenting practices such as corporal punishment. As many as 70 percent of parents agree that spanking is sometimes necessaryand prior to the mids, that figure was over 80 percent. Spanking is more common amongst born-again Christians, Republicans, people who live in the south, and black parents, research shows.
Parents should not spank their children, the American Academy of Pediatrics said on Monday in its most strongly worded policy statement warning against the harmful effects of corporal punishment in the home. Spanking looks to be instantly effective. If a child is misbehaving—if he keeps swearing, or playing with matches—and then you spank that child, the behavior stops immediately. The effect is so apparently obvious that it can drive a sort of delusion.
